Otoplasty
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the shape and size of the ears, especially in cases where there are significant asymmetries between the two ears. In such cases, procedures like ear reduction or earlobe surgery are often performed. Prominent ear, typically characterized by a significant angle between the head and the ear and insufficient development of the upper fold of the ear, is the common concern addressed through otoplasty. The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia.
Who Is Suitable for Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is suitable for individuals with significant shape and size issues with their ears.
Surgery Technique?
Otoplasty involves making an incision at the back of the ear where it meets the head, followed by the use of sutures and cartilage shaping techniques. The operation is completed by closing the incision with aesthetic sutures. It can be performed under general or local anesthesia and typically takes about 1-1.5 hours. A dressing in the form of a bandage is applied.
Surgery Longevity and Recovery
Otoplasty is a permanent surgical procedure. Patients may be discharged the same day or stay in the hospital for one night. Bandages are usually removed on the second day, and patients can take a shower during this process.
Postoperative Period
The stitches dissolve on their own. It is recommended to use a headband for 3 weeks after surgery. Returning to work is generally possible after 5-7 days. Light activities can usually be resumed 2-3 weeks after surgery, while it is advisable to wait for a month before engaging in strenuous activities.
