Breast Reduction
What is breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery is an appropriate treatment option for patients experiencing back, neck, and shoulder pain, noticeable shoulder strap grooves from bras, breast sagging, shape deformities, and skin symptoms like rashes under the breast fold due to large breast size. Simultaneously with the surgery, breast lifting and the redirection of volume located in inappropriate areas of the breast to the correct locations are also performed.
Are you suitable for breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery can be performed on anyone whose general health condition allows for anesthesia, who does not smoke, whose breast development is complete, and who has waited at least 6 months after the end of the breastfeeding period.
Breast reduction surgery technique
The technique to be chosen in breast reduction surgery is determined by the surgeon's preferences and the patient's measurements. Usually, a T-shaped scar remains after the surgery. This scar is more noticeable and red in the early period but gradually lightens and approaches the skin color over time, becoming almost unnoticeable after about a year, depending on the person's healing characteristics. The most critical stage of the surgery is the removal of excess tissues and the reshaping of the remaining tissues while moving the nipple to its new position and preserving its vitality. Even if there are no risk factors, the likelihood of complications is between 0.1% and 0.3%. In patients with risk factors such as diabetes, heart disease, COPD, very saggy breasts (those with a nipple-to-neck distance of over 35 cm), and tobacco users, this rate can increase to 13%.
Permanence and recovery process of breast reduction surgery
Breast reduction surgery is a permanent procedure. Postoperative pain and discomfort are minimal. The removed breast tissue does not return. In fact, this surgery indirectly reduces the risk of developing breast cancer, the most common cancer type in women, by reducing the amount of breast tissue. While it does not revert to its original state, changes in shape can occur due to excessive weight gain, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Alternative methods
There is no alternative method to breast reduction surgery.
After breast reduction surgery
The surgery process is considered complete with the removal of the drains and the ability to shower. The patient can comfortably return to daily life by the end of the first week. It takes 6 months to 1 year for the scars to mature and the breasts to take their final shape. A check-up with breast ultrasound and/or mammogram is recommended in the 6th month post-surgery.
Dr. Ömer Polat's Philosophy
Breast reduction is one of the plastic surgery procedures with the highest patient satisfaction. In addition to cosmetic improvement, it also enhances functional and social well-being. The primary goal is to remove the excess tissue as per the patient's request, healthily position the nipple appropriately, and reshape the breast naturally.
